“don’t get lazy”

salt and shore

Today, my best friend K and I went to Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, which is UNESCO World Heritage Site in western Alberta. It was amazing for a complete lack of more eloquent words. Even as I write this, I’m still wrapping my head around what I just experienced.

So as not to butcher all of the facts, here’s the website: Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump (please keep in mind this is a government run site… they’re naturally going to sugarcoat the coming and decimation of First Peoples culture by the Europeans – not to be all political or anything but let’s be real here).

The experience at the Interpretive center was amazing – first of all, all of the employees and volunteers were active members of the Plains bands. They were passionate, knowledgeable, and proud – as they should be. If you can’t tell already, I love First Peoples cultures. The majority of…

Somewhere, Somehow

Supersonic Euphony

Somehow, somewhere

Someone’s dreams are pulverised

The suckling robbed of toothless smiles

Molested and badly brutalised

A pool of anguish in their eyes

So why do we howl about minor glitches

When a wound somewhere is too wide for stitches?

.

Somewhere, somehow

someone’s taking a last gulp of life

Misery vacuums an unborn, despised

Family planning mishaps, surmised

As tympanum echo with muted replies

So why do we pine over the price of oil

When a soul somewhere won’t even go a mile?

.

Somehow, somewhere

someone’s plunging to their demise

A livelihood ransacked by lies

Hearts ripped and discarded like old auto parts

Taste buds drool with bittersweet retorts

So why do we mope over an ingrate who left

When a home somewhere is ravaged by distress?

.

Somewhere, somehow, someone needs our help

So why should we become so obsessed with self?

My 365: Yellow Flower

Melanie Haynes Photography

The other day, George came in from playing outside with our son to tell me that there was a pretty yellow flower in the yard.  This is pretty remarkable, as neither of us have green thumbs … any landscaping that was done by the previous owner of this house has long since disappeared.

But occasionally we’ll still get the rogue perennial popping up when we least expect it.  Yay for unexpected flowers!
